A 41-year-old man was killed on Friday, January 15, 2016 when the car he was driving collided head-on with a semi truck. Police are investigating the accident.
The man killed was driving a 2012 Ford Escape eastbound on I-196 just before 4:30 in the afternoon when his car went into the oncoming traffic and collided with a westbound 1991 Freightliner semi. The Ford driver was thrown from the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene. The truck driver was not hurt.
Accidents between passenger vehicles and semi trucks are different from other types of accidents. The semi trucking industry is heavily regulated by the government. Establishing the time line of the accident is the priority of accident investigators.
The operators of these trucks must be trained and licensed, and may only drive a certain number of hours in a day. The vehicles must be properly maintained as well. Sometimes inadequate maintenance can make injuries in an accident more serious.
