Proceeds from the annual Guns n Hoses fundraiser basketball game in Syracuse City, UT will go to benefit a Clinton family burned in a propane heater explosion on October 2. The Mathis family was on a camping trip when a propane heater exploded injuring all of them.
The family members, who range in age from 7 to 40, all received first- to third-degree burns to their faces and extremities. Three of them were airlifted to the University of Utah burn center, one was transported there by ambulance, the remaining family member was treated and released at the scene.
The family was camping in a cargo trailer near Fish Lake, UT. On Sunday morning, the father, Mike, struck the igniter on the propane heater and the trailer burst into flames. Mike was on fire but threw his body against the locked door of the camper so the family could escape. He suffered second- and third-degree burns on 37 percent of his body. At the hospital, he was put into a medically-induced coma for a month and has had several surgeries to repair his damaged skin.
Amie, the mother, suffered second- and third-degree burns on 27 percent of her body. She and their daughter Abbie spent a month in the burn center before returning home. The oldest child, Mason, was hospitalized for six days. Marshal, 10, was treated and released.
Fire investigators found a coupling to a propane bottle hose was leaking.
