A boat explosion in Waterford Township injured three teenage girls.
The explosion happened at the Cass Lake Dry Dock Marina in Waterford, located about 30 miles northeast of Detroit. An employee at the marina mistakenly pumped some gas into the water fill tube instead of the gas fill tube. “Police said the employee made a mistake filling the wrong tube,” according to WDIV.
Because the water tank was disconnected, the gas drained to the bottom of the boat. When the owner of the boat engaged the throttle, the gas fumes ignited.
The three girls in the boat, ages 13, 14 and 15, jumped into the water. The 15-year-old, a family friend, suffered second-degree burns. The 14-year-old, a daughter of the owner, suffered third-degree burns and was taken to the Detroit Children’s Hospital pediatric burn center.
Some news reports state that the owner of the boat did not run the blower, implying he was at fault. The parents of the burned children, including the owner of the boat, need to contact a lawyer regarding this issue. Every legitimate personal injury lawyer provides a free consultation, so it will not cost anything to talk with a lawyer about your concerns.
Boating Lawsuit
When a child is severely injured in a boating accident, the parents may have the right to sue on the the child’s behalf. Money recovered in a settlement or verdict can be used to pay hospital bills and other expenses. Some of the money can be put in a trust for the child for future use.
When a parent is responsible, even in part, for the child’s injuries, it may be necessary for the child to sue the parent to get the insurance company involved to fully compensate the child. These can be emotionally charged cases, and an attorney should be consulted as soon as possible. The primary concern is the needs of the child.
