A baby suffered serious head injures when a semi trailer truck crashed into the 1999 Cadillac Escalade SUV he was in on April 1, 2016. The one-year-old was properly restrained in a rear-facing seat when the accident occurred. The driver and a passenger in the car were also injured.
The accident happened around 10:00 a.m. on U.S. 20 and CR 400 W. The Cadillac was stopped in the eastbound lane of U.S. 20, waiting to make a left turn onto CR 400 W. It was rear ended by a white Volvo semi-tractor trailer that was hauling a coil of steel. The impact of the crash pushed the SUV across westbound lanes of U.S. 20. The driver of the semi was not injured in the accident.
The little boy was taken to a LaPorte County hospital and then flown to Riley Hospital for Children. The driver of the car and the passenger were also taken to the hospital, but neither has serious injuries.
According to the Department of Transportation, there have been 14 crashes at that location since January 2015. The DOT has ordered signs for the area, telling drivers to slow down and for semi drivers to use the right lane, but they have not yet been installed. And a left turn lane is going to be added to the road sometime next year.
