Stores that Sold Kapowsin Whole Hogs Recalled for Salmonella

The USDA has posted a list of the stores that sold Kapowsin whole hogs that have been recalled for Salmonella contamination. These products are linked to an outbreak in Washington state that has sickened at least 134 people.

The outbreak strain of Salmonella is Salmonella I4,[5],12:i:-. All of the bacteria tested in this outbreak are resistant to multiple drugs, which means the infection is difficult to treat. Sixteen people have been hospitalized in this outbreak because their illnesses are so severe.

Epidemiologic, laboratory, and traceback findings have identified Kapowsin Meats as the source for this outbreak. Investigators have found the outbreak strain of Salmonella in the Kapowsin slaughter facility. Kapowsin Meats has recalled 116,262 pounds of whole pigs in connection with this outbreak.

The whole pigs were produced on various dates between April 18, 2015 and July 27, 2015. They have the establishment number “Est. 1628” inside the USDA mark of inspection. If you have one of these products in your home freezer, do not cook it or eat it.

You can see the list of stores where the pigs were sold at the USDA web site. They were sold in the following states: Alaska, Oregon, and Washington.
