Several children and adults have been sickened in an E. coli outbreak linked to attendance at the Oklahoma Youth Expo, held in March at the state fair grounds. One child, 8-year-old Connor Sneary, developed hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS) and is in ICU. HUS is a disease that causes kidney failure.
Attorney Fred Pritzker won a settlement last year for a family who lost a little one who developed E. coli-HUS after attending a state fair. “The family wanted state fair officials to do more to prevent E. coli infections linked to animals at the fair,” said Fred. “There was a soap dispenser by the door of an animal exhibit, but it was empty. This is just one example of the lax attitude of fair officials. Sadly, it often takes a lawsuit for changes to be made.”
The Oklahoma Department of Health has not yet found the source of the outbreak. Given the venue, it is highly likely that source was one or more of the animals. E. coli can live in the intestines of cows, goats, even llamas. Fred has handled E. coli lawsuits involving each of these.
Alva, Oklahoma was hit hard in the outbreak. Connor is from Alva. His mother also got sick and was hospitalized. Another adult, Jason Gaisford, also from Alva, became ill, as did his son Campbell, who was hospitalized with severe symptoms.
