Tragic Head-On Collision Kills Minnesota Teen
The Minnesota State Patrol is still investigating a head-on collision on Highway 23 just west of St. Cloud that resulted in the death of a 19-year-old from Monticello. She was a passenger in a Chrysler sedan that crashed head-on with a Ford Econoline van. She was wearing a seat belt and her airbag deployed, according to the state patrol.
Just before 9 a.m. yesterday, the sedan exited off I 94 to Highway 23, turned the wrong way, and traveled west in the eastbound lanes, according to the state patrol. The van was in the left lane of eastbound Highway 23. The sedan and van collided.
The state patrol has not released information as to why the driver was going the wrong way. Our experience is that these kinds of accidents are often caused by distracted driving (talking, texting, etc.), fatigue or intoxication. In some cases, the design of the freeway exit is flawed, making it difficult to see that the road is a 4 lane and not a 2 lane.
