Our attorneys are investigating an outbreak of Salmonella poisoning in Russellville, Alabama. Three people have tested positive, and 9 others may also be part of the outbreak.
The illnesses are all connected, with the suspected source of the outbreak food served at an area restaurant. The Alabama Department of Health is doing additional testing and analyzing epidemiological evidence, including interviews of patients. The 3 confirmed cases were sickened by food eaten on June 4 or 5, 2014.
Food served at restaurants is the source of most Salmonella outbreaks.
“Restaurants are legally responsible when they serve food tainted with dangerous pathogens like Salmonella,” said Fred Pritzker, a national food safety lawyer who represents people sickened by contaminated food. According to Fred, these cases hinge on microbiological evidence, primarily pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE), a process by which enzymes break down the DNA of Salmonella bacteria into pieces. These pieces form a specific genetic pattern, referred to as a “fingerprint”.
