Wawona Recall of Peaches, Nectarines, Plums and Pluots
Wawona Packing Company of Cutler, California has issued 2 recalls of whole white and yellow peaches, white and yellow nectarines, plums and pluots do to possible contamination with Listeria bacteria. These products were sold at grocery stores and retail stores throughout the United States (see list below).
Listeria monocytogenes is one of the most dangerous foodborne pathogens. It often causes Listeria meningitis and other serious complications and, in some outbreaks, is fatal for 25% of the people sickened in the outbreak.
July 19 Recall
The July 19, 2014, recall covered specific lots of fruit packed in the Wawona Packing Co. facility from June 1 through July 12, 2014. Retailers were notified of the lots.
July 31 Recall
The July 31, 2014, recall expanded the earlier recall to cover all products packed in the Wawona Packing Co. facility from June 1, 2014 through July 17, 2014. The recall was issued, according to Wawona Packing Co, because its experts have not identified with scientific certainty the source of Listeria monocytogenes in the facility.
The recalled fruit includes the following brands marketed to consumers: Sweet 2 Eat, Sweet 2 Eat Organic, Mrs. Smittcamp’s, Sam’s, Trader Joe’s and other private labels. These brands will be on the boxes or on the stickers placed on individual fruit.

Whole Foods, Cub Foods, Aldi, Kroger, Giants, Martins, Wegmans, Jay C, Dillons, Bakers, Gerbes, Food4Less, Fremont, King Soopers, City Market, Frys, Fred Meyer, Ralphs, Food4less, FoodsCo, QFC, Smith’s, Hannaford, QFC, Jay C, City Market, Bakers, Gerbes, Save-a-Lot, Stop-and-Shop, Big Y Foods, BJs Wholsesale Club, Costco, Trader Joe’s, Sam’s Club and Walmart.
If you have peaches, nectarines, plums or pluots and are unsure whether they have been recalled, contact the store where they were purchased. If you are still in doubt, throw them out.
