A FedEx truck hit a cyclist yesterday morning. The cyclist was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the Washington County Sheriff’s Office.
The preliminary investigation found evidence that the FedEx truck turned into the path of the cyclist and that inattentiveness was likely a contributing factor in the crash, according to news reports.
Distraction and Inattentiveness Growing Problem
Truck driver distraction and inattentiveness is a growing problem. Cell phone use, although illegal, is the cause of a growing number of fatal accidents, and companies continue to push drivers to cover more ground in less time. When drivers of these large commercial vehicles aren’t concentrating on what is around them, there is a high risk of them not seeing people on bikes, motorcycles and pedestrians.
I have handled many, many cases for families whose loved ones were killed because a driver was not concentrating on the road. If a truck driver says, “I didn’t see the bike,” the problem is the driver was not looking for bicyclists.
I ride my bicycle to work every day that I can and have had many close calls. When I represent families in wrongful death lawsuits against trucking companies, I use this experience to help me build the best case possible, because winning these cases gives companies a reason to make changes.
