Yesterday, an explosion at Fairfield Works, a U.S. Steel plant, killed one person and severely injured 2 others. The plant is located in Fairfield, Alabama, part of the Birmingham metropolitan area. The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office identified the man who died as Edward Lamar Bryant, 53, a resident of Verbena. The 2 injured men are Leo Bridges and Mac Bedwell, both in critical condition at the Trauma and Burn Intensive Care Unit at UAB Hospital.
It appears a pipe exploded in the area of the plant where they make the molten steel using the Q-BOP process, which involves blowing oxygen through molten iron to remove impurities. Tragically, these men were burned with molten iron when the pipe exploded.
“Despite advances, America remains a dangerous place to work. Sadly, almost all workplace accidents are avoidable. I would not be surprised to learn that this latest tragedy likely means that corners were cut,” said Fred Pritzker, an attorney who represents burn victims and their families in personal injury and wrongful death lawsuits.
U.S. Steel has its own security and paramedics, and they were the first responders after the explosion. OSHA officials are at the plant conducting an investigation.
