The families of 2 men who died after taking pure caffeine powder have met with the FDA because they don’t want any other family to lose a loved one to this product. One teaspoon of pure caffeine powder (100% caffeine) is like drinking 25 cups of coffee, according to the FDA.
After 2 young men died from caffeine powder, it is mind boggling that the product is still on the market. The FDA issued a consumer advisory in July and is now considering other action. If the FDA action is anything less than making sure caffeine powder is not available for sale to consumers, the agency has failed.
No matter how many FDA advisories are issued, the average consumer does not know about them. If the product is still on the market, people will buy it, and more young people will die. Selling this product in the U.S. should be a felony, and if someone dies, it should be a murder charge.
These 2 Young Men Died because a Dangerous Product is Being Sold
On May 27, 2014, 18-year-old, Logan James Stiner, a high school senior, athlete and prom king died after taking pure caffeine powder, just a few days before his graduation. On June 24, 2014, James Wade Sweatt, 24, also died after taking pure caffeine powder. He was newly married and a recent graduate of the University of Alabama at Birmingham. He had downloaded a conversion chart to try to calculate the proper dose, but slipped into a coma after consuming the powder and later died.
Both young men purchased the pure caffeine powder online, where it is marketed as if it were a dietary supplement.
“Pure caffeine is not regulated as a drug by the FDA, but it should be. All products marketed as dietary supplements should be subject to the FDA’s rigorous manufacturing and testing standards. Until this happens, we will continue to call for the FDA to close this dangerous loophole.”
Tell Everyone You Know Not to Use Pure Caffeine Powder
Because any action by the federal government is generally slow and often inadequate, we need to spread the word that this is a dangerous product. I am contacting family members and will tell anyone who will listen. This is on my growing list of extremely dangerous products.
If you are ever aware that someone used this product, watch for symptoms of caffeine overdose:
- rapid or dangerously erratic heartbeat
- seizures
- coma
- diarrhea
- disorientation.
