Our clients experienced extreme fatigue, one of the symptoms of hepatitis A. Some of them have relapsing hepatitis, which means they seem to recover and then get sick again. This can happen several times for as long as a year.
Hepatitis A can cause cholestasis, the build-up of bile in the liver. This happens when the virus replicates in hepatocytes (liver cells) and is secreted into the bile. The symptoms of cholestasis include jaundice (yellowing of the skin and eyes), a fever (above 100 degrees), diarrhea and weight loss. This is in addition to extreme fatigue.
In some cases, viral hepatitis A causes liver failure, the loss of liver function. This is extremely serious and can be fatal. People with liver failure from hepatitis A are generally jaundiced, extremely fatigued, feel very sick and have one or more of the following symptoms:
- abnormal bleeding, such as frequent nosebleeds or bleeding gums;
- abnormal bruising;
- hair loss;
- fever;
- attacks of shivering;
- edema, which means fluid build-up, in the legs, ankles and/or feet; and
- ascites, which means a build-up of fluid in the abdomen.
A liver transplant may be required to fully recover from hepatitis A-associated liver failure.
