An Arizona Salmonella Typhimurium victim has retained Pritzker Hageman attorneys to represent her in a lawsuit for compensation. Prior to onset of illness, the woman ate kibbeh from Ikes Restaurant in Sterling Heights, Michigan.
Ike’s Restaurant reportedly served raw beef kibbeh, a Middle Eastern specialty, to several people who became infected with Salmonella in December 2012. The CDC investigation of the outbreak confirmed 18 cases of the outbreak strain of Salmonella in 5 states: Arizona (1), Iowa (1), Illinois (2), Michigan (9), and Wisconsin (5). Our client, the one case in Arizona, spent several days in the hospital.

Not all of the CDC-confirmed Salmonella victims ate at Ike’s, some ate ground beef processed by suppliers of the ground beef Ike’s used to make the kibbeh: Gab Halal Foods of Troy, Michigan, and Jouni Meats Inc., also located in Sterling Heights, which is part of Macomb County north of Detroit. Both of these businesses recalled ground beef products after their meat was associated with the outbreak:
- On January 24, 2013, Jouni Meats, Inc. recalled about 500 pounds of ground beef products.
- On January 25, 2013, Gab Halal Foods recalled about 550 pounds of ground beef products.
The CDC-confirmed outbreak victims were sickened between December 9, 2012 and January 7, 2013. Ill persons range in age from 2 years to 87 years, with a median age of 47 years. Among 14 persons with available information, 7 (50%) patients reported being hospitalized.
