GranuFlo® and NaturaLyte® are acid concentrates used for kidney dialysis to remove wastes from the blood of patients with acute or chronic renal failure. Lawsuits have been filed on behalf of hemodialysis patients who suffered personal injury when inappropriate prescription of these products led to a high serum bicarbonate level and metabolic alkalosis, which is a significant risk factor associated with the following:
- low blood pressure;
- hypokalemia (low potassium);
- hypoxemia (low oxygen in the blood);
- hypercapnia (excessive carbon dioxide in the blood);
- cardiac arrhythmia (abnormal heart rhythm); and
- cardiopulmonary arrest (heart attack).
In severe cases, these can cause death.
