In June, there were 35 confirmed cases of Legionnaires’ disease in the Detroit, Michigan area, according to Michigan Department of Community Health. They were in Wayne and Macomb counties and the city of Detroit.
The investigation has not yet found a common source of illness. Our experience is that most Legionnaires’ disease outbreaks are connected to water sources in hospitals, hotels, motels, resorts, spas, and public buildings with fountains. It is also our experience that most outbreaks are caused by poor maintenance of water sources and insufficient testing of water for Legionella bacteria. Devices that produce water mist include air conditioners, cooling condensers, cooling tower units, whirlpools, spas, room humidifiers, and outdoor misting systems.
Given that these cases are all in the Detroit area, it is unlikely that it was a hotel, motel or resort. If it were a hospital, that would have been immediately obvious. Most likely there were several different sources. If a common source if found for at least some of the cases, the Legionnaires’ victims sickened by that source will have legal cases.
