Listeria lawyer Fred Pritzker is investigating a crab spread recall that was issued by GoldCoast Salads, a Naples, Florida company. GoldCoast recalled Blue Crab Spread because it may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes, a dangerous foodborne pathogen that can cause meningitis, sepsis and wrongful death.

Blue Crab Spread in both one pound and 8 ounce containers have been recalled. The recall includes only products coded EXP 1-31-13.
The product was produced December 3, 2012 and distributed to stores in the North East and South East United States. This recall seems a bit disingenuous because the spread, which had an expiration date of January 31, 2013, has been consumed. This recall cost the company nothing at this point, and will only cost them anything if someone gets sick and evidence supports a lawsuit against the company.
Because the incubation period for this pathogen can be as long as 70 days, anyone who has eaten the spread is at risk for that period of time. Contact your doctor if you or a family member has symptoms:
- fever
- muscle aches
- nausea
- diarrhea
- stiff neck, loss of balance, confusion or convulsions (symptoms of Listeria meningitis).
We urge consumers who have purchased the suspect products not to eat them. If you have the product and no one has eaten it, return it to the point of purchase. If someone has eaten it, you need to put it somewhere safe where no one will eat it and wait the 70 days to make sure no one was sickened by it.
