Patients in Minnesota were prescribed Pradaxa as a “safe” alternative to warfarin (Coumadin), a powerful blood thinner that has some nasty side affects. What doctors did not know is that Pradaxa can cause fatal internal bleeding (including hemorrhagic stroke, which is bleeding on the brain), and there is no antidote to quickly stop the blood thinning effects of Pradaxa. With warfarin, a dose of vitamin K will quickly stop the bleeding.
After reports to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) of 3,781 internal bleeding events and 542 deaths last year associated with Pradaxa, our attorneys are seeking justice for patients injured by the drug.
Pradaxa was approved by the F.D.A. in 2010 for patients with irregular heartbeat. It is manufactured by German drug maker Boehringer Ingelheim, one of the largest pharmaceutical companies in the world. In 2011, Boehringer spent $464 million to promote Pradaxa and sales topped $1 billion. As Boehringer profited from this dangerous drug, patients were dying and experiencing internal bleeding that, in some cases, caused severe intestinal bleeding, heart attack, stroke and permanent damage to other organs.
Pradaxa was one of two medications responsible for the most medication-related deaths reported to the FDA in 2011, according to the Institute for Safe Medication Practices. Research out of the Cleveland Clinic found that Pradaxa may increase the risk of heart attack and irreversible bleeding complications.
