There are now 10 confirmed cases of fungal meningitis in New Hampshire, 16 in New Jersey and over 200 in other states. The CDC has confirmed Exserohilum rostratum in clinical specimens for most of these patients. Late last week the CDC and FDA confirmed confirmed the presence of a fungus known as Exserohilum rostratum in unopened medication vials of preservative-free methylprednisolone acetate (80mg/ml) from one of the three implicated lots from New England Compounding Center (NECC), a compounding pharmacy located in Massachusetts. The laboratory confirmation further links steroid injections from these three lots of NECC steroid to the multistate outbreak of fungal meningitis and joint infections (septic arthritis, also called sepsis arthritis).

There are 282 cases of fungal meningitis, some of which also include stroke due to presumed fungal meningitis, or other central nervous system-related infection. There are 3 peripheral joint infections (e.g., knee, hip, shoulder, elbow). No deaths have been associated with peripheral joint infections. Case counts by state are based on the state where the procedure was performed, not the state of residence.
