Cargill Meat Solutions has recalled almost 30,000 pounds of ground beef distributed to the following grocery stores:
- Hannaford, Stores in Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York and Vermont
- Country Market in Connecticut
- Brackett’s Market in ME
- Will’s Shop N’ Save and Gray Shop N’ Save in ME
- Pure Food Market, Inc in MA
- IGA in MA
- Hunter’s Shop ‘n Save in NH
- IGA in New York
- Peck’s Market in NY
- Hurley Ridge Market in NY
- Wilson’s Lakeside Market in NY
- G-Mart in NY
- IGA in New Jersey
- Town Market in NJ
At least 33 people from 7 states were infected with the outbreak strain of Salmonella Enteritidis, as follows: Maine (1), Massachusetts (3), New Hampshire (2), New York (14), Rhode Island (1), Virginia (2), and Vermont (10). At least 17 of these people purchased the tainted Cargill ground beef from Hannaford Supermarkets.
Among 33 persons for whom information is available, illness onset dates range from June 6, 2012 to June 26, 2012. Ill persons range in age from 12 years to 101 years, with a median age of 55 years; 55% are female, according to the CDC.
Among 30 persons with available information, 11 (37%) reported being hospitalized. Salmonella can cause serious injury and is sometimes fatal.
