Dutch smoked salmon may be linked to Salmonella food poisoning illnesses in the United States. The Dutch company, Foppen, recalled the smoked salmon after reports of hundreds of Salmonella illnesses in the Netherlands and the United States. According to Foppen, Costco is the only U.S. company that received the smoked salmon prior to the recall. Our attorneys are investigating this recall.
The National Institute for Public Health and the Environment said in a statement that about 200 people in the Netherlands and more than 100 people in the United States have been sickened in this outbreak. Because smoked salmon is generally not cooked (a step that could kill any Salmonella bacteria), many others may also have been sickened.

Foppen processes fish in the Netherlands and at a factory in Greece and then distributes it to locations around the world. According to the company, the plant in Greece is where the contamination happened.
