The Golden Corral restaurant in Casper, Wyoming closed last week after a norovirus outbreak was associated with the restaurant. Almost 200 people reported getting the viral illness, which has flu-like symptoms. According to the Casper-Natrona County Health Department, the Golden Corral restaurant closed to “help break the transmission chain”.
Most norovirus outbreaks linked to restaurants are caused by an infected employee of the restaurant, generally a food preparer or server. People who get sick in these outbreaks most often consume food touched by a restaurant employee with norovirus. In these cases, the restaurant is generally responsible.
According to the Billings Gazette:
The Wyoming Department of Health collected stool samples and reviewed emergency room reports of at least 30 people during its investigation, said state Epidemiologist Dr. Tracy Murphy. The agency will never identify a particular food, Harrington said. But the conclusion is that the evidence points to the restaurant, he said.
