Most of the time, onion Salmonella outbreaks include at least some restaurant food. In the most recent outbreak, for example, health officials identified clusters of illness linked to restaurant and foodservice items. They studied these clusters to identify common ingredients in the foods the sick people ate. Many reported eating food served at Mexican-style restaurants that contained onions, cilantro, pepper, and lime.
As they gathered more information from testing and patient interviews, health officials were able to determine that raw imported onions distributed in the U.S. by ProSource Inc. of Hailey, Idaho, and Keeler Family Farms in Deming, NM, were the source of the outbreak.
ProSource and Keeler were two of the companies that issued onion recalls in association with this outbreak. These onions, of various colors and size, were sold under a variety of brand names including Big Bull, Peak Fresh Produce, Sierra Madre, Markon First Crop., Markon Essentials, Rio Blue, ProSource, Rio Valley, Sysco Imperial, Green Giant and Market Pantry. Green Giant, HelloFresh and EveryPlate also issued recalls.
Symptoms of a Salmonella infection include abdominal cramps, nausea, fever, vomiting, and diarrhea that is sometimes bloody. These symptoms usually develop within six to 72 hours of eating contaminated food.
