Our E. coli lawyers help people who developed thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura from contaminated food get compensation and justice.
Your loved one’s case of thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP) could have been caused by food contaminated with E. coli bacteria. If so, you should know that this illness was probably preventable and that our food safety lawyers can help you get compensation. You can contact us by filling out this consultation form.
Our clients with TTP are often hospitalized for weeks or months, and tragically, some of them don’t survive. Most of our clients sickened in this way were part of outbreaks linked to beef or fresh produce contaminated with E. coli O157:H7. A lawsuit helps us get access to relevant corporate information and health department findings. We also conduct an independent investigation.
TTP Blood Clots Made by E. coli Shiga Toxins
E. coli O157 (and certain non-O157 strains) produce toxins (specifically, Shiga toxins) that cause blood clots (thrombi) to form in small blood vessels throughout the body, but particularly in the brain and kidneys.
These thrombi cause a number of problems, including the following:
- the destruction of red blood vessels, leading to lower oxygen and hemolytic anemia; and
- abnormally low levels of platelets.
The brain, kidneys and heart are most at risk of permanent damage in this condition.
Complications of an E. coli infection and TTP include the following:
- Stroke;
- Seizures;
- Coma;
- Heart arrhythmia;
- Hemolytic anemia;
- Heart failure;
- Acute and chronic renal failure (kidney failure);
- Severe abdominal pain;
- Pancreatitis (can include glucose intolerance);
- Enlarged liver;
- Perforated colon;
- Hypertension.
Can I Sue for Thrombotic Thrombocytopenic Purpura?
You can sue for thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura if you were part of an outbreak of E. coli infections and your case of TTP can be linked to that infection. You may have a personal injury claim against a food manufacturer, distributor, retailer, and/or restaurant for medical expenses, lost wages, pain and suffering, and other damages.
If your loved one died from this condition, you may have a wrongful death claim.
