Bologna contaminated with E. coli O157:H7 can cause death or serious illness, including hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS). This product is made from various cuts of meat. If one of them is tainted with the pathogenic bacteria, thousands of pounds of product can be affected since the meat is mixed together during grinding and processing. Outbreaks involving this product are rare because bologna is generally heated during processing, which kills the bacteria.
