On September 29, 2014, a school bus with 15 student passengers was stopped on U.S. 301 in Bradford County, Florida. A logging truck came up from behind the bus and slammed into it. Eyewitnesses said it did not look like the log truck slowed down at all before the accident and that it looked like the truck was out of control.
Seven of the children were taken to the hospital: 4 to UF Health Shands Hospital in Gainesville, 2 to UF Health Jacksonville and the seriously injured girl to Wolfson Children’s Hospital in Jacksonville. Two of the children needed surgery, one for a severe leg injury and one who had a fractured skull.
The bus driver apparently saw the log truck coming and hit the gas, which probably saved lives.
