What is Cyclospora?
Cyclospora cayetanensis is a parasite that causes an infection of the small intestine called cyclosporiasis. The hallmark of these infections is frequent bouts of watery, sometimes explosive, diarrhea. Other symptoms include nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, abdominal cramps, muscle aches, fever, and fatigue.
Untreated, these symptoms will come and go in cycles over a period of weeks or months.
How is Cyclospora Transmitted?
Humans are the only known host for the parasite Cyclospora cayetanensis. It is transmitted when people eat food contaminated with microscopic amounts of feces from an infected person.
This can happen if someone with an infection uses the restroom and does not wash hands carefully before handling food. Or, if water contaminated by the feces of an infected person is used to grow or rinse produce.
Cyclospora infections used to be associated with travel to developing countries in sub-tropical climates, but illnesses linked to imported produce are now commonplace in the U.S.
Recent Cyclospora outbreaks have been linked to imported produce in salads served at McDonald’s, Del Monte vegetable trays sold at Kwik Trip gas stations, Fresh Express salads, and fresh basil and cilantro sold at grocery stores and served at restaurants nationwide. Our food poisoning attorneys represented clients in all of those outbreaks and every other major Cyclospora outbreak in the U.S.
Can I Sue a Restaurant or Food Company for Cyclosporiasis?
Yes, if you got cyclosporiasis and there is sufficient evidence showing a link between your illness and food you purchased from a restaurant or grocery store, you can file a lawsuit seeking compensation. Usually, this includes money for medical expenses, lost wages, pain and suffering, and other damages.
Cyclospora cases can be complicated, so it’s important to choose a legal team with experience. Pritzker Hageman’s food poisoning attorneys have a proven track record in these cases. No other law firm has represented more clients in recent large-scale Cyclospora outbreaks. If you have been sickened by Cyclospora, we want to help you, too.
