If your loved one has Listeria-associated sepsis, it was most likely caused by contaminated food. Attorneys on the Pritzker Hageman food poisoning legal team can help you hold the food company accountable. You can contact our experienced Listeria infection lawyers using the form below.
Listeria sepsis is an inflammatory response to the chemicals the body creates to fight listeriosis, an infection caused by food contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. The inflammation can cause failure of the kidneys, heart and other organs. Blood clots can form in the organs or limbs, which can become gangrenous and need to be amputated. Sepsis is often fatal, particularly if the patient goes into septic shock.
Signs and symptoms can include fever, night sweats, chills, lethargy, mental confusion, diarrhea, a fast heart rate (tachycardia) and fast breathing (hyperventilation). The person will look very sick. It is important to get medical attention as soon as possible because this illness is often fatal.
A Baby Can Be Born with Listeriosis and Become Septic
A baby can get listeriosis in utero (while in the womb) or during delivery. If in utero, the illness generally manifests soon after birth (often a premature birth) as sepsis and problems with circulation and breathing. In full-term babies, the baby may seem fine for a short period of time and then the illness manifests as sepsis and Listeria meningitis.
For any mother reading this whose baby contracted listeriosis, we want you to know that this was not your fault. These bacteria are microscopic and do not change the smell, flavor or appearance of food. They are invisible killers. This is why food processors need to take every measure possible to prevent food from being contaminated.
You Can Sue for Sepsis from Contaminated Food
We have handled cases where a food company knew a processing plant was contaminated with L. monocytogenes and continued to produce food and then sell that food to consumers like you. We help people hold these corporate wrongdoers accountable.
You may have a claim for money damages against a food manufacturer, restaurant, or other party. This means that you can sue for personal injury or wrongful death. Our clients are not sue happy. They want to get answers and hold corporate wrongdoers accountable for preventable food poisoning.
Common food sources of outbreaks are deli meats, hot dogs, kid’s refrigerated meals, smoked salmon and soft cheese. It has also been found in frozen waffles, alfalfa sprouts, potato products, and a variety of other food products.
