Jack & the Green Spouts Listeria Outbreak

Jack & the Green Sprouts alfalfa and alfalfa onion sprouts are the source of a Listeria outbreak that sickened four people, according to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The products were sold at natural food stores in Minnesota, Iowa, and Wisconsin.

The FDA released little information on the outbreak, stating only that illnesses were reported after the recall. The agency did not disclose which states were included in the outbreak, the severity of the illnesses or the ages of the patients.

Alfalfa Sprout Listeria Recall

On October 4, Jack & the Green Sprouts issued a Listeria recall for alfalfa sprouts and alfalfa onion sprouts. The problem was discovered through the company’s routine testing. At the time the recall was issued, the company said it was not aware of any illnesses.

The recalled sprouts had the following product identification information:

  • Sold in 5-ounce, clear plastic packages
  • Lot #300
  • UPC 763247198915 or #246 UPC 763247195945

Symptoms of a Listeria Infection

Symptoms of a Listeria infection, called listeriosis, usually develop within 24 hours of exposure but can sometimes take as long as 70 days to appear. They include –

  • Severe headache
  • Stiff neck
  • Muscle aches
  • Upset stomach or diarrhea
  • Loss of balance, confusion, or convulsions
  • Flu-like symptoms in pregnant women

2016 E. coli Outbreak

Listeria, E. coli and Salmonella food poisoning from sprouts is common. This is not the first time sprouts produced by Jack & the Bean Sprouts have been linked to an outbreak. In 2016, the company’s alfalfa sprouts were linked to an E. coli outbreak. Eleven people were sickened and two were hospitalized.
