Radiance of the Seas Salmonella Outbreak

For the second time this year, a food poisoning outbreak has occurred onboard the cruise ship Radiance of the Seas. During a September 20-27 voyage with 2,172 passengers on board, a Salmonella outbreak sickened 180 people. Three crew members and 177 passengers were sickened with symptoms including diarrhea, abdominal cramps, headache, and muscle aches. Stool samples were collected for testing.

People get Salmonella when they eat raw or undercooked food that is contaminated with animal feces containing Salmonella, or when they eat food that is handled or prepared by an infected person who did not was their hands properly after using the restroom.

Symptoms of a Salmonella infection usually include nausea, fever, abdominal cramps, and diarrhea that can be bloody. Often they develop within six to 72 hours of exposure. Severe infections require hospitalization.

2024 Norovirus Outbreak

In April 2024, a norovirus outbreak occurred during an April 8–April 22 voyage with 1,993 passengers onboard. At least 67 passengers and two crew members were sickened.
