The death toll in the Boar’s Head Listeria outbreak has climbed.
The 18-state outbreak now includes fifty-seven illnesses and nine fatalities, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). That’s 14 more illnesses and six more deaths reported since the agency’s last update on August 8.
In addition to the three deaths previously reported in Illinois, New Jersey, and Virginia; Florida, New Mexico, New York and Tennessee have each reported one fatality, and two deaths in South Carolina, which both occurred in the Lowcountry region, have been reported.

Deli Meat Listeria Outbreaks Often Include Fatalities
Deli meats are one of the foods most commonly linked to Listeria infections. Outbreaks linked to deli meats often include fatalities. Since 2018, five other multistate outbreaks have been linked to sliced deli meats. All of them have included at least one fatality.
Some people are at elevated risk for Listeria including people over 65, people with weakened immune systems, pregnant women, and babies. Among pregnant women, Listeria can cause premature delivery of an infected newborn, miscarriage, or stillbirth even if the expectant mother experiences only mild flu-like symptoms. This outbreak includes one pregnant woman who was hospitalized for her illness but remained pregnant after her recovery.
The patients in this outbreak range in age from 32 to 95 years old with a median age of 77. That means more than half of these patients are over 65 and at high risk of suffering severe illness.
