Langston Hughes Legionnaires’ Disease Outbreak

A Legionnaires’ disease outbreak at Langston Hughes Apartments in New York City’s Brownsville neighborhood includes at least two people. Over the last 12 months, the cases were reported from two buildings in the apartment complex located on Sutter Ave.

People get Legionnaires’ disease, a severe form of pneumonia, when they inhale water vapor that is contaminated with Legionella bacteria. The city health department is working with the housing authority to sample and test the water system. While the investigation is underway, residents have been told to take baths instead of showers and stay out of the bathroom while the tub is filling.
