Updated May 12 with a recall expansion. Chang Farm of Whatley, MA has expanded its Listeria recall for mung bean sprouts to include all mung bean and soy bean sprouts. Consumers who have purchased these sprouts should not eat them as Listeria can cause serious illness or death. Among pregnant women, Listeria can cause miscarriage and stillbirth.
The recalled sprouts, produced by Chang Farm, were sold in 10-lb bags and 12-oz, retail bags that were packaged on April 23, 2023 with a “sell by” date of May 7, 2023. They were distributed to retail stores and wholesalers throughout CT, MA, NJ, NY, and RI. The recall includes:
- Bean Sprouts 10lb bag and bag in box
- Nature’s Wonder Premium Beans Sprouts 12oz bag (UPC: 815098001330)
- Nature’s Wonder Premium Soybean Sprouts 12oz bag (UPC: 815098001347)
The product has been distributed to retail stores and wholesalers throughout MA, CT, NY, RI, and NJ.
Symptoms of a Listeria infection include high fever, severe headaches, stiff neck, other muscle stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain, diarrhea, confusion, and loss of balance. Pregnant women with Listeria infections can suffer miscarriages and stillbirths even if they only experience mild, flu-like symptoms.
At the time of the recall, the company was not aware of any reported illnesses.
The problem was discovered through a sample analysis by the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets Division of Food Safety and Inspection.
