After moving our law offices into the historic Pillsbury Library in January 2023, Pritzker Hageman is proud to join in the celebration of National Library Week (April 23-29, 2023). In recognition of this year’s theme, “There’s More to the Story,” we’re sharing how the Pillsbury Library became home to Pritzker Hageman’s headquarters in Minneapolis.
History of The Pillsbury Library
Built between 1902 and 1904, the Pillsbury Library was named after John Sargent Pillsbury (1827-1901), who was a prominent industrialist, politician, and philanthropist in Minneapolis.
John S. Pillsbury co-founded the Pillsbury Company (which was the largest flour mill in the world at the time), served as the eighth governor of Minnesota, and became known as the “Father of the University” after serving on the University of Minnesota Board of Regents for 38 years.
Before Pillsbury died, he made plans to build a library on the east side of the Mississippi in what is now known as the Old Town neighborhood. In fact, Pillsbury told the historian Horace Hudson that the location was “best situated to serve the needs of the largest number.”
Pillsbury’s family carried out his plans to build the library after his death. Built by architect Charles Aldrich, the building features the Neoclassical Beaux-Arts style that was popularized by the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair.
The Pillsbury Branch of the Minneapolis Public Library opened in 1904 and served the community until 1967 when it was replaced by the Southeast Branch (now the Arvonne Fraser Library).
When the library branch closed, the building on 100 University Ave SE served as an art gallery and housed several businesses including a gelato company and a medical office before Pritzker Hageman moved in.
