Genetic tests showed that the outbreak patients were sickened by the same strain of E. coli, meaning all of them were exposed to the same source of contamination. Health officials interviewed 18 of the people sickened, 15 of them said they were ALDI shoppers. Fourteen patients remembered eating Earth Grown brand falafel before they developed E. coli symptoms which include abdominal cramps and diarrhea that can be bloody.
The outbreak patients, who range in age from 1 to 71 years old, said they first developed symptoms on dates ranging from July 13, 2022, to October 24, 2022. The number of cases reported from each state is Florida (2), Iowa (2), Kansas (1), Michigan (13), Ohio (1), and Wisconsin (5).
