Utah health officials are investigating a possible ground beef Salmonella outbreak associated with International Marketplace in Midvale, Utah. The investigation is linked to routine tests performed by the Utah Department of Agriculture and Food (UDAF) on March 22, 2022, when samples of ground beef tested positive for Salmonella enterica.

After follow-up tests conducted on done on March 31, 2022, tested presumptive for Salmonella, UDAF issued a cease and desist order on the meat department of the International Marketplace and embargoed all products. The agency is warning consumers not to eat any ground beef produced at International Marketplace from March 22 to March 31, 2022. And, along with the Utah Public Health Laboratory, is testing other International Marketplace food items to determine the scope of the contamination. Utah health officials have not yet released information about the number of illnesses under investigation.
Symptoms of a Salmonella infection, which include nausea, fever, abdominal cramps, and diarrhea, usually develop within six to 72 hours of exposure. These symptoms usually last between four and seven days. Patients with severe infections require hospitalization.
Ground beef Salmonella outbreaks are fairly common. In one recent outbreak, nine of the 13 people sickened were hospitalized and one person died.
