Hardie’s crabmeat has been linked to a Salmonella outbreak that has sickened five people in Maine and New Hampshire, according to the Maine Department of Health and Human Services. The Hardie’s crab meat Salmonella outbreak includes two hospitalizations.
The implicated crab meat was produced by Hardie’s Crabmeat in Deer Isle, Maine, and sold at multiple locations throughout the state. Consumers who purchased products produced between June 15, 20210 and August 15, 2021, should not eat them. Freezing does not kill Salmonella.
Symptoms of a Salmonella infection include nausea, fever, abdominal pain, and diarrhea. These symptoms usually develop within six to 72 hours after eating contaminated food. Small children, seniors and people with compromised immune systems are more likely than others to develop severe infections.
The 40 percent hospitalization rate for this outbreak is about twice the average. This could be because the outbreak strain is particularly virulent, or because some outbreak patients are in the high-risk group.
Fish, crustaceans, and mollusks don’t harbor Salmonella in their digestive systems. So, when seafood derived from these animals is contaminated with Salmonella, it is due to human or animal fecal contamination of the water where they were grown. Or, through contact with human or animal feces during processing. Maine health officials believe that the crab meat linked to this outbreak was likely contaminated during preparation and packaging, but that the problem is not ongoing.
