Onions Linked to Salmonella Outbreak Recalled [Updated]

UPDATED November 17, 2021 with additional recalled onions and updated outbreak information.

Several onion recalls have been issued in connection with a multistate Salmonella outbreak. The recalled onions were distributed to restaurants, meal kit companies such as HelloFresh and EverPlate and sold at grocery stores including Walmart stores in Oklahoma and Texas and Target stores in Minnesota and Texas.

The recalled onions were grown in Chihuahua, Mexico and distributed in the U.S. by two companies, ProSource Produce LLC of Hailey, Idaho, and Keeler Family Farms of Deming, New Mexico. The recall includes various colors and sizes of onions that were sold under a variety of brand names including Green Giant and Market Pantry.

Companies and consumers who have purchased these onions or do not know the origin of the onions they have purchased should not eat them as Salmonella can cause serious illness. Of the over 800 people sickened in this outbreak, at least 157 have been hospitalized.

ProSource Onion Salmonella Recall

The ProSource onion Salmonella recall includes red, white, and yellow recalled onions that were shipped from Chihuahua, Mexico, between July 1, 2021, and August 31, 2021, and distributed to wholesalers, broadline foodservice customers, meal kit companies such as HelloFresh, and EverPlate and retail stores under the brand names Big Bull, Peak Fresh Produce, Sierra Madre, Markon First Crop., Markon Essentials, Rio Blue, ProSource, Rio Valley, and Sysco Imperial. They were packaged in 50-lb., 25 lb., 10- lb., 5-lb., 3-lb., and 2 lb mesh sacks; and in 50-lb., 40-lb., 25-lb., 10-lb., and 5 lb. cartons.

The recalled onions were distributed to establishments in the following states: AL, AR, AZ, CA, CO, CT, FL, GA, IA, ID, IL, IN, KS, KY, LA, MA, MD, MI, MN, MO, MS, NC, NE, NJ, NM, NY, OH, OK, PA, RI, SC, TN, TX, VA, and WI. They were also distributed in Ontario and Quebec, Canada.

ProSource received its last shipment of these onions at the end of August 202. Properly stored, onions can have a shelf-life of up to three months.

Target Onion Recall

ProSource provided onions recalled for Salmonella to Target stores in Minnesota and Texas. The Target onion recall includes red and white onions sold in bulk and yellow onions sold in 3-lb. bags. The item numbers for the recalled onions are:

  • bulk red onions, 224-17-4082 TCIN 15028401
  • bulk jumbo white onions, 224-17-4663 TCIN 15028400
  • 211-17-0001 TCIN 14916870 Market Pantry Yellow Onion – 3lb

The recalled onions were sold in Texas at the McKinney SW store and in Minnesota at Plymouth, Stillwater, St. Paul MIdway, and Richfield.

Walmart Onion Recall

ProSource provided onions recalled for Salmonella to Walmart stores in Oklahoma and Texas. About 36 percent of the illnesses in this outbreak were reported from these two states.

The Walmart onion recall includes stores in the following Texas locations: Burleson, Colleyville, N. Cockrell Hill Rd, in Dallas, Coit Rd in Dallas, Denison, Farmers Branch, Frisco, Fort Worth, Lawrence St. in Gainesville, W. Buckingham Rd. in Garland, Greenville, Henderson, Keller, E. Round Grove Rd. in Lewisville, Gilmer Rd in Longview, N. Highway 67 in Midlothian, Plano, Roanoke, Sherman, and S. Broadway Ave. in Tyler.

Oklahoma Walmart Stores Included in Onion Recall

The Walmart onion recall includes stores in the following Oklahoma locations: Broken Arrow, Jenks, Miami, Muskogee, 12101 E 96th St N in Owasso, 12912 E 86th St N in Owasso, Stillwater, 207 S Memorial Dr in Tulsa,  3116 S Garnett Rd in Tulsa, 4404 S Peoria Ave. in Tulsa, 4720 E 21st St. in Tulsa and 3139 S Harvard Ave E, in Tulsa.

One Walmart store in Kansas, located at 2500 S. Main St. in Fort Scott, also received the recalled onions.

ProSource Onion Salmonella Recall

HelloFresh Onion Recall

HelloFresh onion recall SalmonellaHelloFresh has issued an onion recall because ProSource is one of its suppliers. The recall includes all onions in meal kits produced from July 7, 2021, through September 8, 2021. Meal kits produced after September 8, 2021, are not affected by this recall.

To determine if they have received meals included in this recall, HelloFresh customers can check the product codes, located on the bottom square of the box shipping label. (Circled in red in the photo.)

The recalled products were produced on weeks July 7, 2021, through September 1, 2021, or weeks 28-36. The HelloFresh product codes for the recalled items are:

EveryPlate Onion Recall

Because EveryPlate is owned by HelloFresh and uses some of the same suppliers, it is also affected by the onion Salmonella recall.  EveryPlate has issued an onion recall for products produced July 7, 2021, through September 8, 2021. The product codes appear in the same location as HelloFresh product codes, circled in red on the above photo.

The recalled products were produced on weeks July 7, 2021, through September 1, 2021, or weeks 28-36. The EveryPlate product codes for the recalled items are:

Green Giant Onion Recall

On October 23, 2021, Potandon Produce L.L.C. of Idaho Falls, Idaho issued an onion Salmonella recall for:

  • Green Giant Fresh whole yellow onions in 2 lb. bags, 3 lb. bags, and 5 lb. bags
  • Green Giant Fresh whole white onions in 2 lb. bags;
  • Green Giant Fresh whole red onions in 2 lb. bags

These onions were supplied by ProSource. Potandon also received onions from Keeler Family Farms that are under recall. (see below.)

Keeler Onion Recall

The Keeler onion Salmonella recall includes red, yellow, and white onions shipped from Chihuahua, Mexico from July 1, 202, through August 25, 2021. They were processed at Keeler Family Farms in  Deming, NM and packaged in 25-lb. and 50-lb. mesh sacks with the brand name MVP and “product of MX” on the label. The last shipment was received on August 25, 2021. The recalled MVP onions were distributed to wholesalers, restaurants, and retail stores in all 50 states and the District of Columbia.

Green Giant Onion Recall Expanded

On November 15, 2021, Potandon Produce L.L.C. of Idaho Falls, Idaho expanded its October 26, 2021 recall of whole yellow onions sold under the brand name Green Giant Fresh to include onions shipped to an additional distribution center in Champaign, IL.  Potandon received these onions from its supplier Keeler Family Farms.

The company stated that it had notified UNFI, the distributor, about this updated recall of onions sourced from Keeler Family Farms.

On October 26, 2021, Potandon Produce L.L.C. of Idaho Falls, Idaho issued a recall for Green Giant Fresh whole yellow onions because ProSource was one of its onion suppliers. The recalled onions potentially contaminated with Salmonella were sent to UNFI distribution centers in Fargo, North Dakota; Bismarck, North Dakota, and Hopkins, Minnesota between July 9, 2021, and August 6, 2021. The recall includes the following Green Giant onions:

  • whole yellow onions sold in 2 lb. bags, 3 lb. bags, and 5 lb. bags
  • whole white onions in 2 lb. bags
  • whole red onions in 2 lb. bags

This recall does not affect any other fresh, canned or frozen Green Giant products.

Alsum Farm Recall

On November 12, 2021, Alsum Farms & Produce, Inc. of Friesland, Wisconsin issued an onion Salmonella recall. The recalled onions were distributed to stores in Wisconsin, Illinois, Michigan, and Pennsylvania between July 13, 2021, and August 18, 2021. The recall includes:

  • yellow onions in 3 lb. bags, 5 lb. bags, and 50 lb. cartons
  • white onions in 2 lb. bags
  • red onions in 2 lb. bags

Alsum issued the recall after being notified by a supplier, Keeler Family Farms, that the onions imported from Mexico may be contaminated with Salmonella.

Pier C Onion Salmnoneall Recall

Pier-C Produce Inc. of Leamington, Ontario Canada issued a recall for 2-lb bags of white onions supplied by Keeler Family Farms. These onions were shipped t a retailer and a distributor in Florida in August.

Onion Salmonella Outbreak

This recall has been issued in connection with a 38-state Salmonella outbreak linked to onions. Twenty illness clusters included in this outbreak were linked to restaurant and foodservice items containing raw onions. Many of the patients reported eating Mexican-style restaurant food containing onions before they became ill.

According to the CDC’s most recent outbreak update issued, November 12, 2021, 892 people have been sickened by onions contaminated with Salmonella Oranienburg. The patients, who range in age from less than 1 year old to 101 years old, first developed symptoms of infection on dates ranging from May 31, 2021, to October 25, 2021. At least 183 people have been hospitalized.
