A Salmonella outbreak linked to breaded, stuffed chicken sold under the brand names Milford Valley, Dutch Farms, and Kirkwood has ended after sickening 36 people in 11 states, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Twelve people were hospitalized.
These chicken Cordon Bleu and chicken broccoli and cheese products were sold in the freezer sections at ALDI and other stores including Al’s, County Market, Martin’s Meijer, Save A Lot, Strack & Van Til, and Walmart stores.

Salmonella Symptoms
Symptoms of a Salmonella infection include abdominal cramps, fever, and diarrhea usually appear within six to 72 hours of eating contaminated food. The people sickened in this outbreak, who range in age from 1 to 83 years old, reported the onset of symptoms on dates ranging from February 21, 2021, to August 16, 2021.
The illnesses were reported from the following states: Arizona (4), Arkansas (1), Connecticut (1), Illinois (10), Indiana (4), Michigan (1), Minnesota (4), Nevada (1), New York (7), Ohio (1), and Oklahoma (2).
Serenade Breaded, Stuffed Chicken Salmonella Recall
On August 9, 2021, Serenade Foods issued a recall for frozen, raw, breaded, pre-browned, stuffed chicken products produced at its plant in Milford, IN on February 24, 2021, and February 25, 2021. The recall included 59,251 pounds of these products sold under three brand names -Dutch Farms, Milford Valley, and Kirkwood. The packaging of the recalled products have the establishment number “P- 2375” inside the USDA mark of inspection.
Months before the recall, when only 17 illnesses had been reported, the Minnesota Department of Agriculture tested products it had purchased from grocery stores and found the outbreak strain of Salmonella Enteritidis in Kirkwood Chicken Cordon Bleu. This information was included in the CDC’s June 2 announcement of this outbreak. Kirkwood is an ALDI store brand.
But Serenade didn’t issue the recall until two months later (when the outbreak had doubled in size) after the USDA FSIS found the outbreaks strain of Salmonella Enteritidis in unopened intact packages of raw, frozen, breaded chicken stuffed with broccoli and cheese that were collected from an outbreak patient’s home.
Previous Serenade Foods Salmonella Outbreak
This is not the first time these products have been linked to an outbreak. In 2006, Kirkwood stuffed, breaded chicken products, made by Serenade Foods were recalled in connection with a Salmonella Enteritidis outbreak that sickened 29 people in Minnesota and Michigan. That outbreak was also linked to products made by Aspen Foods of Chicago.
