A Salmonella outbreak linked to imported cooked shrimp was thought to have ended last month, but it didn’t, according to new information from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Since July 21, 2021, when the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said the Salmonella Weltevreden outbreak had ended after sickening six people in two states, three more illnesses have been reported. Two of them in Michigan and one in Rhode Island. One of those people was hospitalized. That brings the outbreak total to nine illnesses in four states with three hospitalizations.
And, worse yet, Avanti Frozen Foods of India has so far refused to expand its shrimp recall after learning from the FDA that shrimp outside the recall was linked to new illnesses. The initial recall included frozen cooked shrimp sold under the brand names 365, Censea, Chicken of the Sea, CWNO, Hannaford, Honest Catch, Meijer, Open Acres, and Waterfront Bistro. The specific items included in that recall are no longer for sale, but some consumers may still have them in their freezers. The FDA has not yet disclosed the brand names or lot numbers associated with the new illnesses.
