A Salmonella outbreak linked to stuffed, breaded chicken products sold at ALDI and other stores has sickened seven people in New York, according to the latest information from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). That’s an increase of five illnesses since the agency’s last update on June 2.
One of the reasons for that increase may be that a recall for the chicken broccoli and cheese and chicken cordon bleu items associated with this outbreak weren’t recalled until August 9, 2021. The recalled items were made by Serenade Foods of Milford, IN, and sold under the brand names Kirkwood, Milford Valley, and Dutch Farms. Consumers who have purchased them should not eat them as Salmonella can cause serious illness.
In New York, these products were distributed to ALDI stores and to the Golub Corp. in Schenectady, according to information published on the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s website. Golub Corp. is the parent company of Price Chopper and that location is the Price Chopper Distribution Center. In addition to Price Chopper stores, this facility also services, Market 32 and Market Bistro stores.

Symptoms of a Salmonella Infection
Symptoms of a Salmonella infection include abdominal cramps, fever, and diarrhea. These symptoms usually appear within six to 72 hours of eating contaminated food. The people sickened in this outbreak, who range in age from 3 to 83 years old, said they first experienced symptoms on dates ranging from February 21, 2021, to June 28, 2021.
This outbreak includes 28 illnesses from eight states. The number of illnesses reported from each state is: Arizona (1), Connecticut (1), Illinois (9), Indiana (4), Michigan (1), Minnesota (4), Nevada (1), and New York (7). Eleven people have been hospitalized.

Previous Outbreak Linked to Serenade Products
This is not the first time stuffed, breaded chicken items produced by Serenade Foods have been linked to a Salmonella outbreak. In 2006, Kirkwood stuffed, breaded chicken products, made by Serenade Foods, were recalled in connection with a Salmonella Enteritidis outbreak. Similar products made by Aspen Foods of Chicago were also recalled in association with that outbreak which sickened 29 people in Minnesota and Michigan.
