Greater Omaha Packing of Omaha has issued a recall for 295,236 pounds of raw beef products that may be contaminated with E. coli O157:H7. The raw beef cuts were intended for “non-intact use” meaning they were to be used to make ground beef. The recalled products, which have “EST. 960A” inside the USDA mark of inspection, were distributed to further processors in Illinois, Indiana, Minnesota, and Nebraska.
The recalled products were produced on July 13, 2021. The problem was discovered by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (USDA FSIS) during routine testing.
At the time of the recall, the company said it was not aware of any illnesses associated with the recalled ground beef. However, a retail distribution list has not yet been made available, so the brand names and stores where these products were sold are known.
Symptoms of an E. coli infection, which include abdominal cramps and diarrhea that can be bloody, usually develop within one to three days of exposure and last about a week. About 7 percent of E. coli patients develop a complication called hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS) a form of kidney failure that can be fatal. Most often, HUS affects young children. HUS symptoms appear about one week after initial E. coli symptoms and include skin that easily bruises and decreased urine output. Anyone with these symptoms should seek immediate medical care.
