A propane leak caused by a ruptured supply line was the source of a house explosion in Marshall, MN that killed Gail and Nancy Schipansky, an investigation by the State Fire Marshall’s Office has determined. A week before the explosion, a crew installing a septic system struck the supply line creating a leak. The explosion occurred when a spark from the dryer ignited a buildup of propane gas that had accumulated in the basement of the home, according to investigators.

The Schipansky’s home was located in the 2800 block of Highway 19, about two miles east of Marshall. At around 6:30 a.m. on August 27, an explosion occurred killing Gail Schipansky, 74. Nancy Schipansky, 71, suffered severe injuries. She was airlifted to Regions Hospital in St. Paul where died on September 2.
When emergency responders arrived at the scene that morning, all that remained of the home was a pile of rubble. Area residents told local media that they heard the sound and felt the force of the blast from miles away.
