A Salmonella outbreak linked to grocery store prepared food containing chicken sickened 15 people in New York City in May 2019. Using SaTScan software to conduct an automated spatiotemporal analysis of notifiable diseases, researchers were able to detect the outbreak nine days before serotyping results were available. This study shows that this method detection could provide crucial time-saving benefits for public officials who are investigating geographically focused, community-acquired outbreaks, researchers said.
The Salmonella Blockley outbreak was linked to prepared foods containing chicken at a grocery store in New York City. The outbreak strain isolated from those sickened and from leftover chicken from one patient’s homes.
The 15 people who were sickened, who ranged in age from 26 to 61 years old, developed symptoms from May 14–21, 2019 after eating rotisserie chicken, chicken salad or chicken soup.
