A hepatitis A outbreak linked to fresh conventional blackberries sold at Fresh Thyme has ended after sickening 20 people. Eleven people were hospitalized.

Hepatitis A is a virus that causes infection of the liver. It is transmitted when an infected person does not wash hands properly and touches food that others eat. Symptoms of an infection include yellowing of the skin or eyes, lack of appetite, nausea, abdominal cramps, fever, fatigue, dark urine and clay-colored stools. Without treatment, these symptoms can last weeks or months
In this outbreak, illnesses were reported from seven states among consumers who purchased fresh conventional blackberries from Fresh Thyme Farmers Market and Woodman’s Market. These patients, who range in age from 14 to 73 years old, reported onset of symptoms on dates ranging from October 8, 2019, to November 15, 2019.
The number of illnesses reported from each state was: IN (3), MI (1), MN (1), MO (1), NE (7), PA (1) and WI (6).
