What is Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome (HUS)?
HUS, a form of kidney failure that targets young people and children, is a complication that develops in 5 percent to 10 percent of E. coli patients. It causes small blood vessels in the kidneys to become damaged or swollen and clots form blocking the filtering system of the kidneys. Kidney failure then triggers other serious health problems because the toxins that should have been eliminated from the body in urine end up in the blood. The buildup of these toxins is called uremia. HUS treatments include dialysis, blood transfusions and plasma therapy to remove these toxins from the body.
Wisconsin E. coli Outbreak
The outbreak includes at least 20 cases throughout the state and lettuce is a suspected source, according to local media reports. Lettuce and other leafy greens are a common source of E.coli outbreaks. And the number of E. coli outbreaks linked to leafy greens has been increasing in recent years.
Over the last 24 months, there have been four multistate outbreaks linked to leafy greens:
- In September 2019, there was a romaine lettuce E. coli outbreak that sickened 23 people in 12 states.
- In the fall of 2018, a romaine lettuce E. coli outbreak sickened 62 people in 16 states.
- In the spring of 2018, a romaine lettuce outbreak sickened 210 people in 36 states. Five people died.
- In the fall of 2017, a leafy greens E. coli outbreak sickened 25 people in 15 states. One person died.
And, in Maryland right now, an E. coli outbreak linked to prepackaged salads is unfolding. So far, seven people who ate Ready Pac Bistro Bowl Chicken Caesar Salads purchased from Sam’s Club stores in Maryland have been sickened. One person has been hospitalized. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is working with state health officials to determine whether other products may be affected.
