The outbreak, which began in August 2018, included the recall of 12 million pounds of ground beef. Dozens of retailers, including Walmart, Winn Dixie, Sam’s Club, Kroger and Sprouts sold the products. (See the complete list below.)
The second of two recalls for these products was issued in December 2018. But more than 70 new cases were reported after that. So, although federal health officials have declared the outbreak over, they are concerned that consumers may have some of these products in their freezers.
The people sickened in this outbreak range in age from less than one to 99 years old. At least 117 of them were so sick they needed to be hospitalized.
Health officials used genetic testing to identify the outbreak strain of Salmonella Newport. This technique, called Whole Genome Sequencing, creates a kind of fingerprint for the particular strain of Salmonella cultured from stool samples of those sickened. If this strain is found in food products, it shows a link. State health officials in Arizona and Nevada found the outbreak strain in unopened packages of beef products purchased by case-patients in this outbreak.
