Two people died when their home in Newton County, MS exploded around 7 p.m. on Saturday, October 22. The blast that killed Billy Ray Alexander, 81, and Janelle Alexander, 78, and leveled their single-story brick home, could be heard from miles away, witnesses told local media.
Irven Skinner, assistant chief of the Duffee Fire Department told WTOK that he arrived on scene three minutes after the report and the house that once stood on Chunky Duffee Road was gone. “It was a very large explosion,” he said. The Newton County Sheriff’s Department, Chunky Volunteer Fire Department and the Union Volunteer Fire Department also responded to the scene.
The source of the explosion is believed to be a propane leak around the fireplace. The investigation is ongoing.
