Aug. 30, 2016, Update: The driver of the fire truck admitted to being sleep deprived and believes he fell asleep before rolling the vehicle, according to court records. He also admitted to using marijuana and cocaine in the “days and hours before the wreck.” He was charged with 2 counts of criminal vehicular homicide in Anoka County District Court. There is also evidence he was speeding, according to news reports.
A fire truck carrying 9 people was traveling from Michigan on its way to the Box Canyon wildfire in Utah when it crashed on Interstate 35W in Minnesota. The truck left the road, hit the median cable barriers, rolled several times and ripped apart. Two of the men, both passengers, tragically died. Seven others were injured.
This information is incomplete and will be updated by the Minnesota State Patrol later today or tomorrow. Our thoughts are with the injured, their families, and the friends and families of those killed.
These men were part of the Beartown Firefighters, a group dedicated to fighting wildfires that is associated with the Keweenaw Bay Indian Community (KBIC). These men were willing to risk their lives fighting fires. Tragically, two of them died in a rollover crash, the cause of which is yet unknown.
