The prevalence of truck accidents varies widely from state to state. In California, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, there were 244 large trucks involved in fatal highway accidents in 2012, the most recent year for which data is available. That’s more than any other state, except for Texas, but is consistent the large number of big trucks on the highways in California. Arguably, the most dangerous state in the United States for truck accidents is North Dakota, where large trucks are involved in 20 percent of fatal accidents, despite the state being home to only 1.2 percent of the nation’s large trucks.
